Captain Murphy - “Shake Weight” (The Mighty Jungle Version)
Basically what you have here is a collaboration that could only take place in the Information Age, with computers and the internet. You’ve got Flying Lotus, rapping over a TNGHT beat (Lunice x Hud Mo) for his Duality Mixtape. Then Mighty Jungle come along and take remove the beat completely with inversion techniques, and recreate it fromt the ground up. It’s a way of collaborating that just wasn’t possible until recently. Meanwhile all the artists involved in this song live thousands of miles from each other.
Official Stuff:
The Mighty Jungle are pleased to announce their remix of the Captain Murphy track “Shake Weight.” Their remix takes the microtonal Trap beat originally produced by TNGHT and tugs on it’s heartstrings, reinterpreting the main riff wit traditional Chinese instrumentation, while retaining the groove and complexity of the original drums. The result is a bit of an oxymoron: a contemplative banger, heavy on the bass and yet less of a war anthem and more of an ode to fallen street samurais.
“To play our first show with Flying Lotus was a dream come true. We got to see him do his Captain Murphy project. It was real nice.” - The Mighty Jungle
For those who still don’t know, Captain Murphy is an alter ego of Steve Ellison aka Flying Lotus. The mainly Rap project was unveiled when the single “Between Friends,” was released late last year, featuring the infamous Earl Sweatshirt and an as yet unknown rapper who as it would turn out, was Flying Lotus himself.
